Student research is evidenced by the very visible presence of our students at scientific meetings. For example, the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology SICB ; , held in Boston in January, was attended by several biologists from The Museum including University of Chicago students associated with The Museum's Zoology Department. University of Chicago student Bradley Wright Zoology Fishes--Biomechanics Laboratory ; was the recipient of the D. Dwight Davis Award from the SICBs Division of Vertebrate Morphology. The award is presented each year for the best scientific presentation by a student in the fields of comparative morphology, functional morphology, or integrative vertebrate biology. D. Dwight Davis, for whom the award is named, was a prominent Field Museum curator from 1932-1965. Numerous students presented papers or poster sessions at other meetings, such as the World Congress of Malacology at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. the American Society of Mammologists Meetings, North American Ornithological Conference, Society for Vertebrate Paleontology, the World Congress of Malacology, and many others. This strong showing at scientific meetings reflects the active research being carried out by the students in various Academic Affairs areas. Museum curators oversaw a number of Doctoral Dissertation Projects, Masters Theses, and Senior Theses during 1998, in which studies in Field Museum labs and collections were an important factor. Graduate and undergraduate students also accompanied Museum scientists into the field for hands-on collecting experience. Conservation Biology Since 1990 The Field Museum has become a leader in environmental conservation by conducting active conservation and training programs, as well as strengthening its efforts in environmental education. The Office of Environmental and Conservation Programs ECP ; provides much of the focus of The Museums conservation activities, most of which is the result of multi-disciplinary and multidepartmental efforts, as well as partnerships with other institutions. 1998 efforts in conservation are detailed on page 21 of this Report. Media Development Field Museum scientists were featured frequently and prominently in the headlines and airwaves of both Chicago and national media during 1998. Only selected examples are presented here. Chief Preparator of Vertebrate Paleontology William Simpson and Lead Sue Preparator Bruce Schumacher both Geology ; were on hand at the dedication of the new Dinosaur preparation lab at Disneys Animal Kingdom in April as part of a national press event marking the opening of Disney's new theme park. A conference on Human Genetic Diversity organized by Curator John Terrell Anthropology ; generated a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune on September 30. The article featured comments from Terrell and other participants regarding current thought and practice on genetic diversity and the implications of related research for public health. Associate Curator Lawrence Heaney Zoology ; and Research Associate Jack Regalado Botany ; were interviewed about their new book published by The Field Museum, Vanishing Treasures of the Philippine Rain Forest on the WBEZ radio program 848 in June. Adjunct Curator Margaret Thayer Zoology Insects ; , designated press contact for the summer exhibit Living Colors exhibit, did several interviews with print and TV reporters regarding the exhibit. Associate Curator of Zoology Janet Voight Invertebrates ; and her research were featured during August in The New York Times' weekly Science Times, The Washington Post, and in a 50minute radio interview for the Voice of America's "News Now" show. The October 19 issue of the New Yorker featured an article by author John McPhee 1998 Founders' Council Award recipient ; on Research Associate William Bemis. The article mentions Bemis' collaboration with Curator Lance Grande on their massive and masterful study of Amiid fishes. The April 20 edition of The New Explorers with Bill Kurtis on the A&E cable network focused on The Field Museum and Conservation Internationals joint AquaRAP Aquatic Rapid Assessment Program ; in.
Antegren natalizumab ; is being trialled in two Phase III, two year, randomised, multi-centre, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials. First is the AFFIRM Antegren safety and efficacy in relapsing remitting MS ; trial of approximately 900 participants, which is designed to determine whether Antegren is effective in slowing the rate of relapses. Second is the SENTINEL Safety and Efficacy of Antegren in combination with Avonex interferon beta-1a ; in relapsing remitting MS ; trial in approximately 1, 200 patients, which is designed to determine whether the treatment of MS with Antegren in combination with Avonex is more effective than Avonex treatment alone in slowing the rate of disability in MS and in reducing the rate of relapses. Both of these trials will be completed at the end of 2004, after which analysis of the results will be carried out. CTLA4Ig is a protein with novel immunosuppressive mechanisms that has shown promise in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in clinical studies. This has led the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb to explore the potential of the treatment in MS. A Phase II, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study is trialling the effects of CTLA4Ig on relapsing remitting MS disease activity and relapse rate. Mycophenolate mofetil is an oral immunosuppressant currently used to prevent rejection of organ transplants. This therapy is being tested in a number of trials, either as a single therapy, or in combination with beta interferon, as a possible treatment for varying types of MS. A Schwann cell transplantation trial taking place at Yale University has just finished, with no evidence of Schwann cell survival in the first three patients with MS to be implanted. A second clinical trial of Schwann cell transplantation is currently being planned. Campath-1H alemtuzumab ; is being trialled in early relapsing remitting MS: the CAMMS223 trail. Participants are receiving either Campath-1H in one of two doses ; or a beta interferon. This multi-centre international clinical trial is for three years. The first results from this study should be available in 2006.
Our success as an organization is determined by the degree to which we provide physicians with the ability to treat their patients more effectively and provide patients with the ability to overcome disease and lead healthier lives. Our accountability to this principle was never more evident than in 2002. Through the dedication of Gilead employees around the world, we have built an anti-infective franchise that is stronger than ever. Rapidly adapting to our exceptional growth, Gilead made key organizational changes in 2002. Following the divestiture of our Boulder, Colorado operations in December 2001, we reorganized our research and development group under Norbert Bischofberger, PhD, Executive Vice President, Research and Development, to ensure seamless integration of all teams and functions. To streamline critical processes, manufacturing was aligned with our commercial operations, now all reporting to Mark Perry, Executive Vice President, Operations. Strategic, financial, communications and technological planning responsibilities were combined under centralized management led by John Milligan, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In light of the increasing influence of the European Union and its distinct healthcare practices and policies, we established a European headquarters in Paris, France, managed by Mercedes Garcia, Vice President, European Operations.

Thirteen of the patients with atrial fibrillation or flutter and five of those with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia agreed to participate in a long-term oral verapamil study, as did a second group of ten patients who did not fulfill the criteria for inclusion in the IV protocol by virtue of age or presence of heart failure. These patients were given the oral form of verapamil because of disabling supraventricular tachycardia refractory to conventional drug therapy.
To explain the observed patterns of yield variability, we propose three hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that agricultural R&D in the past several decades has been biased toward generating technologies for use in more favorable production environments, e.g., areas with better access to reliable water supplies. The efficacy of many agricultural technologies is often highly location specific. For example, a large part of agricultural R&D is aimed at ameliorating site specific constraints to crop production for example, increasing the frost, drought, or water-logging tolerance of plants, or changing the susceptibility of crops and animals to different pests and diseases. A salient feature of agricultural R&D is that it has favored irrigated regions where scale effects are more pronounced than in rainfed areas. The potential for agricultural R&D spillover is greater for the relatively more homogenous irrigated areas than for the agro-ecologically heterogeneous rainfed areas. Complex aspects of agroecological specificity may inhibit technology spillover to less-favored production areas, and therefore reduce the potential payoffs to research investment. For these reasons, agricultural and axert.
How many inferferon drugs are there? There are three interferon drugs available for the treatment of MS: interferon B1a Avonex ; , interferon B1b Betaseron ; , and interferon B1a Rebif ; . All of the interferon drugs must be injected. None are available to take by mouth. The interferon drugs have different doses and routes of injection. Betaseron is injected every other day subcutaneously under the skin ; . Rebif is injected three times per week subcutaneously. Avonex is injected once a week intramuscularly into a muscle ; . Interferon drugs can affect the liver In this issue of Neurology, Tremlett and colleagues reviewed the liver function tests of 835 patients with MS who were using one of the three available interferon drugs. The investigators reviewed medical records for patients aged 18 to 60 years who had two or more attacks of MS during the 2 years prior to entering the study. Liver function tests were checked before treatment with interferon drugs and at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment was started. After the first year of interferon treatment, liver function tests were checked every year. Patients who had been on interferon treatment in the past or who had any other medical problems that could cause liver abnormalities were not included in the study. Overall, nearly one third 36% ; of the patients treated with interferon.

Before the introduction of the beta interferons Betaseron interferon beta-1b ; and Avonex interferon beta-1a ; in the 1990s, drug treatment for MS was limited. It consisted mainly of pain relievers and muscle relaxers supplemented by corticosteroids, or more recently by immunosuppressants for acute flares. Therapy now includes medications like the beta interferons and Copaxone glatiramer -- approved in 1996 ; that may actually stop or slow down the progression of MS, not just alleviate its symptoms. Biologic response modifiers, such as Enbrel etanercept ; and Remicade infliximab ; , are being studied for possible effectiveness in treating MS. They interfere with tumor necrosis factor, which is thought to cause inflammation in autoimmune diseases. The biologics license application BLA ; for a third beta interferon, Rebif interferon beta-1a ; , was submitted to the FDA in October 2001 and approved in March 2002. Rolipram, a phosphodiesterase-inhibiting drug used in other countries as an antidepressant, is in U.S. Phase II trials for MS. Zenapax daclizumab ; , a monoclonal antibody already approved for kidney transplants, is also in Phase II studies for MS.

COMPARISON OF CANOPY, TRUNKSPACE AND SOIL CO2 FLUX MEASUREMENTS FOR A TEMPERATE BEECH FOREST OVER AN ANNUAL CYCLE E. Dellwik 1 ; , K. Pilegaard 2 ; , N.O. Jensen 1 ; 1 ; Wind Energy and Atmospheric Physics Department, Ris National Laboratory 2 ; Plant Biology and Biogeochemistry Department, Ris National Laboratory ebba llwik risoe Fax: + 45 4677 5970 Over nearly a year, carbon dioxide fluxes have been measured at three different levels in and over a 25m high temperate beech forest canopy. Co-variance techniques were used to measure the canopy flux at 43m height and the trunk space flux at 4m height. Soil respiration was measured in an automated chamber system. Ensemble averages over five days are calculated for four different phenological situations. The first situation is taken from July 1999 with fully developed tree crowns and sparsly vegetated forest floor. The second situation is taken from a measurement period in January 2000 with hardly any green vegetation. The last two situations describe the conditions in the forest just before and just after frondescence of the trees in April May 2000. Major differences in the diurnal flux patterns are investigated and explained. Models with varying complexity are evaluated for the different components of the carbon dioxide flux and barberry.
New NAD Masters Series redefines the brand with muscle, grace and style, says an overawed Richard Stevenson Following a corporate shake-up and a major investment in R&D the NAD brand is back with a stunning range of AV components destined to shake-up the market. The industrial design is superb, the attention to detail faultless, the technical specifications impressive and, best of all, the price - relatively speaking - still represents the excellent value for money for which NAD has always been famed. But can the Masters Series take on the established brands when the budget is not very budget at all? NAD M55 UNIVERSAL DISC PLAYER To say that the NAD Masters Series M55 is something of a departure for NAD is a big understatement. Gone is dull-as-dishwater design and drab-grey finish, gone are the budget underpinnings to hit low price points and gone is the NAD house sound to be replaced with The M55 is a true universal disc -spinner with full multichannel DVD-A and Super Audio CD playback, and is built solidly enough to withstand the rigours of everyday use for about two centuries. The casework is a mix of steel panels, extruded aluminium and die-cast zinc alloy sitting on vibration absorbing silicone rubber feet. Inside is no less beautiful, with a pristine layout of high-tech glass-epoxy circuit boards and serious power supplies. The features count is not left wanting, with the full complement of Dolby and DTS modes, MP3, WMA and JPEG file support and video-scaling up to 1080i resolution. Upgradeable architecture means that 1080p scaling is only a firmware update away. Setup is via an onscreen menu system that comes second only to Yamaha's.

System requirements for juices in 21 CFR part 120. If the juice therapy is intended for use as part of a disease treatment regimen instead of for the general wellness, the vegetable juice would also be subject to regulation as a drug under the Act." "We explain these two points in greater detail later in this document." FDA says, for example, that a "Botanical products, depending on the circumstances, may be regulated as drugs, cosmetics, dietary supplements, or foods. All four types of products are subject to the Act. For example, a botanical product intended for use in treating a disease would generally be regulated as a drug; a botanical product taken by mouth, labeled as a dietary supplement, and intended for use to affect the structure or function of the body would generally be regulated as a dietary supplement; a raw or dried botanical intended for use as an ingredient to flavor food would generally be regulated as a food or as a food additive, depending on and benicar.
Ning of the 90s. The first was the successful use of intravenous immunoglobulin IVIg ; in treating Guillain-Barr syndrome GBS ; . A large clinical trial from a Dutch group [Dyck PJ, Kurtzke JF. Plasmapheresis in Guillain-Barre syndrome. Neurology. 1985 Aug; 35 8 ; : 1105-7] showed that IVIg was beneficial when given early in the course of the disease and was at least as effective as plasmapheresis. Once that word got out, practicing neurologists quickly started using IVIg for the treatment of other autoimmune diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, and inflammatory myopathy. The second significant advance was the discovery of the effectiveness of interferon beta-1b Betaseron ; in the suppression of multiple sclerosis MS ; exacerbations, followed by its FDA approval, and the subsequent approval of a number of other MS treatments, including interferon beta-1a Avonex ; and glatiramer acetate Copaxone ; , and more recently, Rebif, another form of interferon beta-1a. At first glance, I thought the reports of interferon beta-1b's efficacy were disappointing. However, once I started using it and the other agents as well, I found them to be far more effective and much better tolerated than the clinical trials seemed to suggest. This seems particularly true when I think about the decline in the number of monthly admissions because of acute MS exacerbations I have seen since that time.
In the initial therapy group, the percentages of relapse-free patients over 2 years were significantly higher for patients treated with Avonex 48.5% ; and Betaseron 45.7% ; , than for those treated with Rebif 22 mcg 39.8% ; and Rebif 44 mcg 34.6% ; Figure 2 ; . In the follow-up therapy group, the 2-year relapse-free percentages were 38.9%, 36.2%, 37.5%, and 22.3%, respectively and benzphetamine.

Lid margin and is most often caused by a lowgrade staphylococcal infection or seborrheic dermatitis. Posterior blepharitis involves the orifices of the slender sebaceous glands of the eyelids the meibomian glands ; and is often associated with acne rosacea. Symptoms include ocular burning, a sensation that a foreign body is in the eye, and watering. Symptoms are typically worse in the morning and gradually improve throughout the day. Although the onset is sudden in some patients, blepharitis is usually chronic--often lifelong--and starts insidiously. A sign of anterior blepharitis is crusting around the eyelashes. Patients with concomitant seborrheic dermatitis also have oily skin and flaking from the eyebrows and scalp. Signs of posterior blepharitis are oil inspissation around the meibomian gland openings, telangiectasias of the eyelid margin, and accompanying acne rosacea skin pustules, telangiectasias, and erythema ; . Treat both forms with eyelid hygiene: applying warm compresses to the eyelid margins, followed by gentle massage to remove the debris from the eyelashes and meibomian glands. This is done two to four times daily until acute symptoms resolve, then once daily. Because blepharitis is chronic, eyelid hygiene must be continued indefinitely to prevent acute exacerbations. Posterior blepharitis that does not respond to hygiene can be also treated with oral tetracycline, which is believed to improve meibomian gland function and alter bacterial colonization. Some patients also have tear deficiency, which can be addressed with tear replacement therapy see below ; .2, 3 Keratoconjunctivitis sicca dry eye ; Dryness can cause mild eye redness. Patients typically report a foreign body sensation, burning, and paradoxically, watering. Symptoms often worsen as the day progresses and are most prominent at night. Dryness can be due to: Local disturbances in the tear film such as aqueous deficiency An abnormal eyelid position Systemic autoimmune conditions such as Sjgren syndrome Hormonal changes eg, in menopause and bepridil.

Suppression of thyrotropin TSH ; stimulation of the thyroid gland by adding exogenous L -thyroxine L -T4 ; to ATD treatment may be beneficial 6, 7 ; , and direct immunomodulatory effects of high doses of ATD or L -T4 have also been proposed 1, 8 ; . In clinical studies, however, the relapse rates of Graves' disease have varied from 2 to 60% 8, 9 ; , and the impact of different treatment regimens and predictors of outcome, such as TRAb and smoking, remains a matter of controversy 3, 1013 ; . It is therefore of clinical interest to identify treatment regimens that lower relapse rates. We conducted a randomized factorial clinical trial to compare the effect of different ATD regimens on the overall relapse rate and to search for prognostic factors.
