International development agencies have been designing approaches and programs linking agriculture and nutrition to address the problem of malnutrition since the 1960s. The conventional link has been from agriculture to food security. The lack of an explicit indicator of food security led to the use of anthropometric indicators to measure nutritional status. Yet these indicators capture far more than food security as illustrated in a conceptual framework of nutrition developed by UNICEF UNICEF 1990 ; , Figure 5 ; . Food security is just one underlying determinant of nutrition, along with the quality of maternal and child care, the adequacy and use of preventive and curative health services, and whether individuals are living in a healthy environment. The more immediate determinants of nutritional status are dietary intake and health status. The focus of this report is on the connection between agricultural production and dietary intake via food security. In the 1970s food price spikes prompted alarm and concerns about food availability and brought the term "food security" into the development arena. Programs operated under an assumption that agriculture's primary role in this equation was to address protein-energy deficiencies by increasing food production and lowering food prices. During the Green Revolution the availability of staple cereals increased globally and prices fell proportionately, yet protein-energy malnutrition persisted. Publications on agriculture-nutrition linkages became critical of what appeared to be an implicit assumption that improved nutrition would follow naturally from the gains achieved through production increases. Box 1 lists the key messages to emerge from these publications during this period and afterward. In 1981 the World Bank commissioned a report by Per PinstrupAndersen titled Nutritional Consequences of Agricultural Projects: Conceptual Relationships and Assessment Approaches, which argued that if agricultural development was to better contribute to improving nutrition, nutritional aims would have to be explicitly incorporated into agricultural production decisions. Amartya Sen's work on famines and the concept of entitlements, together with the failure to achieve real improvements in nutritional outcomes, led food security practitioners to shift their attention to improving poor households' income and their economic access to food.

To prepare teaching programs and procure medical speakers. The drug companies offer these programs to hospitals or medical groups that are accredited to provide CME. Many MECCs are also officially approved by the medical profession's CME accrediting body to award education credits on their own. The MECCs are candid in their advertising to their drug industry clients. They say their purpose is to increase their clients' sales through professional "education"--and that is what they do. If any further demonstration were needed of the true purpose of what the industry calls "medical education, " it was clearly supplied by a recent front-page article in The New York Times, with an accompanying report on the PBS program Now with Bill Moyers. According to these sources, three of the largest advertising agencies handling pharmaceutical accounts are now investing in companies that do contract research and prepare "educational" packages for the drug industry. This astonishingly incestuous arrangement makes it clear that research and education have both become subordinate to sales promotion.

In response to cutaneous injury, expression of collagenase-1 is induced in keratinocytes via 2 1 contact with native type I collagen, and enzyme activity is essential for cell migration over this substratum. However, the cellular mechanism s ; mediating integrin signaling remain poorly understood. We demonstrate here that treatment of keratinocytes cultured on type I collagen with epidermal growth factor receptor EGFR ; blocking antibodies or a specific receptor antagonist inhibited cell migration across type I collagen and the matrix-directed stimulation of collagenase-1 production. Additionally, stimulation of collagenase-1 expression by hepatocyte growth factor, transforming growth factor- 1, and interferon- was blocked by EGFR inhibitors, suggesting a required EGFR autocrine signaling step for enzyme expression. Collagenase-1 mRNA was not detectable in keratinocytes isolated immediately from normal skin, but increased progressively following 2 h of contact with collagen. In contrast, EGFR mRNA was expressed at high steady-state levels in keratinocytes isolated immediately from intact skin but was absent following 2 h cell contact with collagen, suggesting down-regulation following receptor activation. Indeed, tyrosine phosphorylation of the EGFR was evident as early as 10 min following cell contact with collagen. Treatment of keratinocytes cultured on collagen with EGFR antagonist or heparin-binding HB ; -EGF neutralizing antibodies dramatically inhibited the sustained expression 6 24 h ; collagenase-1 mRNA, whereas initial induction by collagen alone 2 h ; was unaffected. Finally, expression of collagenase-1 in ex vivo wounded skin and re-epithelialization of partial thickness porcine burn wounds was blocked following treatment with EGFR inhibitors. These results demonstrate that keratinocyte contact with type I collagen is sufficient to induce collagenase-1 expression, whereas sustained enzyme production requires autocrine EGFR activation by HB-EGF as an obligatory intermediate step, thereby maintaining collagenase-1-dependent migration during the re-epithelialization of epidermal wounds.

The series of structured questions within each section were designed to ensure that the review team extracted the data consistently. The quality of the studies and the evidence produced were assessed by an analysis of the strengths and limitations of the empirical studies, which were included in the `Methodology' section of the data-extraction instrument. The EPPI-Centre identified the following three components to help assess the quality of studies in terms of `weight of evidence' and were used in this review: i. ii. iii. the soundness of studies internal methodological coherence ; , based upon the study only; the appropriateness of the research design and analysis used for answering the review question; the relevance of the study topic focus from the sample, measures, scenario, or other indicator of the focus of the study ; to the review question. The `weight of evidence' within each study was addressed in the final section of the data-extraction instrument, the analysis section. The aim was to identify the available evidence in support of the review question and sub-question focusing on: the curricular and extra curricular interventions identified and their aims; the evidence demonstrating that the curricular or extra-curricular interventions assist career decision-making, learning and occupational progression; and.

The Canadian Supreme Court has narrowly upheld a ruling against Percy Schmeiser, a Saskatchewan farmer who used genetically modified canola seeds patented by Monsanto while replanting his field. In a 5-4 decision, the court sided with the biotech giant, which sued Schmeiser in 1997 after Monsanto agents found the company's patented gene in canola plants on his farm. The court agreed that he stole Monsanto's seed, even though Schmeiser maintained that he inadvertently used seed that had blown into his field. Despite the ruling, Schmeiser, 73, said the decision is a personal victory because the court also ruled that he did not profit from the seed. Schmeiser will not have to pay the 0, 000 sought by Monsanto to cover court costs and the profit the company said Schmeiser had gained by using its seed and benztropine. We have examined trade policies and trade flows in the MERCOSUR countries in detail, and, using a simple economic model based on imperfect competition and product differentiation, analyzed the likely impact of a MERCOSUR-type FTA on members and on non-members. In Section 2, we have presented a detailed picture of trade policies in the four MERCOSUR countries since the mid-80s. Although MERCOSUR itself is a preferential trading arrangement, the magnitude of unilateral MFN tariff reductions is remarkable.16 The data in Section 2 are in conformity with Ethier's insight that the additional reductions in preferential tariffs are relatively modest in comparison with the aggressive unilateral reforms. In Section 3, we have examined trade flows in MERCOSUR countries to determine whether various reform measures reviewed in Section 2 lead to the trade liberalization ex post. The examination clearly shows that there has been a dramatic trade expansion in these countries. It is interesting to note that the increase in trade can be observed both in intra-regional trade and in inter-regional trade, and therefore, trade policies in MERCOSUR countries are likely to have brought about trade expansion or trade creation ; rather than trade diversion. In Section 4, after developing a simple Krugman-type trade model based on imperfect competition and product differentiation, we have analyzed the likely impact of a MERCOSUR-type FTA, where the reduction of preferential tariffs is accompanied by the reduction of non-discriminatory MFN tariffs, in comparison with the impact of a traditional FTA, where only preferential tariffs decline. Using the model, we have rigorously shown that a MERCOSUR-type FTA leads to trade creation and that the welfare of both members and non-members increases. In other words, unlike the traditional regionalism, which is more like a "beggar thy neighbor" arrangement, the new regionalism can be the "Land of Cockaign", where everyone is better off than without it. Needless to say, many more studies are needed to accurately evaluate the impact of MERCOSUR. First, the model used in Section 4 depends on many simplified assumptions, and a more sophisticated model would give deeper insights into the real picture of MERCOSUR and other trading arrangements. Second, in this paper, we presented the theoretical analysis alone. However, a simulation exercise based on the model in future research would reveal how much countries gained from a MERCOSUR-type FTA. Despite all of these imperfections, we believe that this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the New Regionalism, because, using data analysis and a theoretical analysis, this paper has revealed a striking feature of MERCOSUR: MERCOSUR is not just a traditional preferential trading arrangement but a case in New Regionalism, where preferential liberalization is accompanied or preceded ; by aggressive unilateral trade reform by its members. 5 years after vaccination, with partial immunity persisting for 10 years or more.11 The vaccine will prevent infection or reduce the severity of illness if given within a few days following exposure to smallpox.3 Smallpox vaccine is administered by puncturing the skin multiple times with a bifurcated needle containing a small quantity of vaccine. A small papule develops after 3 to 5 days, following the virus replication in the dermis. The papule evolves into a vesicular and pustular stage over 8 to 10 days.17 There is typically an indurated area surrounding the central lesion. This is followed by scab formation with development of a residual scar. The process of vesiculation and pustule formation defines a `take' of the vaccine. The take is considered equivocal if a pustule, ulcer, or scab, does not develop at the vaccine site; revaccination is recommended in this situation.17 Skin reactions following revaccination tend to be milder and have an accelerated course and bepridil.

Barberry use in bulgaria extracts obtained from the roots of barberry species have been used in eastern and bulgarian folk medicine in rheumatic and other chronic inflammatory disorders and bevacizumab. The envelope glycoprotein, termed the spike protein, of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus SARS-CoV ; is known to mediate viral entry. Similar to other class 1 viral fusion proteins, the heptad repeat regions of SARS-CoV spike are thought to undergo conformational changes from a prefusion form to a subsequent post-fusion form that enables fusion of the viral and host membranes. Recently, the structure of a post-fusion form of SARS-CoV spike, which consists of isolated domains of heptad repeats 1 and 2 HR1 and HR2 ; , has been determined by x-ray crystallography. To date there is no structural information for the prefusion conformations of SARS-CoV HR1 and HR2. In this work we present the NMR structure of the HR2 domain residues 11411193 ; from SARS-CoV termed S2-HR2 ; in the presence of the co-solvent trifluoroethanol. We find that in the absence of HR1, S2-HR2 forms a coiled coil symmetric trimer with a complex molecular mass of 18 kDa. The S2-HR2 structure, which is the first example of the prefusion form of coronavirus envelope, supports the current model of viral membrane fusion and gives insight into the design of structure-based antagonists of SARS. share a similar mechanism for viral entry and fusion reviewed in Refs. 7, 10, and 11 ; . Although the details of SARS-CoV entry are still unclear, it is believed that following binding to the host cell receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 12, 13 ; , S2, the fusion domain, undergoes a series of structural changes from a prefusion conformation to a postfusion conformation. During these structural changes a fusion peptide within S2 is exposed and inserted into the membrane of the target cell. Within S2, there are two heptad repeat domains: HR1 and HR2. The post-fusion form of the fusion domain is relatively well characterized by structural biology. For example, high resolution structures have been determined for HIV gp41 14 16 ; , simian immunodeficiency virus gp41 1719 ; , influenza virus HA 20 ; , Ebola virus glycoprotein 21, 22 ; , mouse hepatitis virus 23 ; , SARS-CoV 24, 25 ; , and parainfluenza virus F 26 ; . Note that all of these structures represent the so called six-helix bundle form or fusion core, where the N-terminal helices, HR1, form a trimeric coiled coil core surrounded by the C-terminal helices, HR2, oriented in an antiparallel fashion. This conformation is thought to allow the target membrane to come into close contact with the viral membrane, ultimately promoting membrane fusion and viral entry. In the prefusion state, the HR2 region is thought to self-associate to form a trimeric coiled coil. Evidence for the prefusion state is based on studies of influenza HA 27, 28 ; and more recently parainfluenza F 29 ; . Further evidence comes from studies of peptides from HIV gp41 and parainfluenza F corresponding to the HR1 and HR2 regions. These peptides are thought to inhibit viral fusion by binding to the prefusion conformation and thereby block the formation of the HR1 HR2 six-helix bundle that is necessary for membrane fusion 7, 30 33 ; . One of the peptides, corresponding to the HR2 region of gp41, termed T20 or fuzeon, is currently used as a drug against HIV 34, 35 ; . Interestingly, analogous peptides from SARS-CoV have also been shown to exhibit antiviral activity, although at significantly higher concentrations than T20 36 39 ; . Recent studies have shown that SARS-CoV S2-HR2 in isolation, unlike the corresponding domain from HIV gp41, forms a helical structure in solution based on circular dichroism studies and, further, that the predominant species present is that of a trimer 40 ; . However, a detailed three-dimensional structure of the SARS-CoV S2-HR2 has not yet been available. In this work, we present the solution structure of the timeric SARS-CoV-S2-HR2 in the presence of the co-solvent TFE, which was necessary to solubilize the construct. We find that S2-HR2 forms a symmetric coiled coil trimer in solution. Importantly, this structure provides the first structural evidence for the prefusion state of SARS-CoV envelope. Moreover, the S2-HR2 structure provides a framework for the design of novel peptides that inhibit viral entry.

Aventis and its predecessor Rh ne-Poulenc S.A. ; has paid dividends on the Ordinary Shares for each o year since 1984. The payment and amount of dividends on Aventis Ordinary Shares are subject to the recommendation of the Aventis Supervisory Board, ratification by the Management Board and declaration by the shareholders at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. The dividend policy of Aventis currently centers on a target payout level of approximately 35%, which is in line with our competitors in the pharmaceutical industry. Payment and amount of future dividends will depend on our results of operations, financial conditions and other factors. Dividends paid to U.S. holders of Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares who are not residents of France will generally be subject to French withholding tax at a rate of 25% or, if such holders qualify for benefits under the applicable U.S. France tax treaty and comply with the procedures for claiming treaty benefits, a reduced rate of 15%. Certain U.S. holders of Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares who are residents of the United States may be entitled to receive a subsequent payment representing the French avoir fiscal, less applicable French withholding tax at a rate of 15%. The French avoir fiscal is equal to 50% of the dividend paid to physical persons and 40% of the dividends paid to shareholders other than physical persons. Payment equivalent to the French avoir fiscal, less applicable French withholding tax, will generally be made by the French State only following receipt of a claim for such payment and, in any event, not before January 15 of the year following the calendar year in which the dividend is paid. Certain U.S. tax-exempt holders of Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares will be entitled only to partial payments of the French avoir fiscal. See ``Item 10. Additional Information'' for a summary of these and other French and U.S. tax consequences to holders of Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares. Holders of Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares should consult their own tax advisors with respect to the tax consequences of an investment in the Share-ADSs or Ordinary Shares. The table below sets forth for the years indicated, the amount of dividends paid by Rh ne-Poulenc for o the years 1996 to 1998 and dividends paid by Aventis for 1999 and 2000 per Ordinary Share without including the French avoir fiscal before deduction of applicable French withholding tax ; , the amount of dividends paid per Ordinary Share including the French avoir fiscal before deduction of applicable French withholding tax ; , net income per Ordinary Share and the pay-out ratio. The mastoid or middle ear for proper care and postoperative maintenance. Our observations suggest that the meatoplasty problem is most prevalent in postoperative tympanoplastymastoidectomy procedures for chronic otitis media and in postoperative procedures for repair of congenital stenosis. The meatus is determined or defined by the following local tissues: skin, cartilage, subcutaneous tissue, and bone. A common mistake in meatoplasty is to treat the soft tissues adequately without surgical attention to the bony meatus, which may be too constrictive. This is generally not true for meatoplasty in open cavity mastoidectomy. Open Cavity Mastoidectomy Excision of conchal cartilage, the cornerstone of meatoplasty, may be performed through either an endaural or postauricular approach; however, a postauricular approach is easier and in most instances preferable. Either a Krner flap or endaural incision to create a flap can be constructed by making longitudinal incisions in the skin of the external auditory canal at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock and connecting them with a posterior incision parallel to the tympanic annulus. The incisions at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock are then extended from the posterior annular incision in the external auditory canal, to the conchal bowl. A large, crescent-shaped piece of conchal cartilage is then removed, taking care not the injure the meatal skin and retaining its continuity with the Krner flap. To provide an opening adequate to allow drainage and selfcleansing of the surgical defect, a meatoplasty should comfortably accept the surgeon's index finger. As the meatoplasty procedure results in some troublesome bleeding, it can be deferred until the middle ear and mastoid work have been completed and the tympanoplastic graft is packed securely in place. It is important to prevent postoperative stenosis by controlling formation of granulation tissue in the region of the meatus. This is done with a steroid-impregnated firm pack. This pack also serves as an obturator, allowing squamous epithelium to heal around the raw areas. The pack is left in place for two weeks. Any healing granulations are controlled by curettage, steroid antibiotic ointments, or, if need be, a tight cotton wick saturated with Corticosporin drops applied every 2 to 3 hours. Three weeks after surgery, if raw areas persist, granulations can be lightly curetted and Thiersch grafting, using very thin split-thickness skin, can be done as an outpatient procedure. This should be necessary only occasionally. It should also be noted that if stenosis occurs months and years later, it is usually due to poor maintenance and follow-up and often to bony spicules or ridges osteogenesis ; that form at the level of the mastoid cortex. If stenosis occurs, it will be necessary to elevate and preserve meatal skin and to drill or curette the bone widely to create a large meatus and belladonna!

INTRODUCTION Three major groups of invasive woody weeds in New Zealand show different dispersal mechanisms. Wind dispersed conifers are invading mountain grasslands, threatening pastoral and nature conservation values. Fleshy-fruited, bird dispersed woody weeds invade several natural ecosystems, and some threaten agricultural land. Two major agricultural weeds, gorse Ulex europaeus ; and broom Cytisus scoparius ; , disperse their seeds by explosive opening of the dry fruit ballistic dispersal ; . Seed production by members of these groups, and the conditions that favour their establishment in the South Island, are relatively well understood Molloy 1964; Benecke 1967; Allen & Wilson 1992; Allen et al. 1995 ; . In this paper we compare the rate and pattern of spread of examples of each group, and discuss the implications for management. METHODS Wind dispersal: lodgepole pine Pinus contorta ; All stems of lodgepole pine were cut close to ground level and their growth rings counted in a triangular area of snow tussock grassland extending from a 35-year-old plantation on Mid Dome NZMS 260 E43 618043; sample area 2 m wide ; eastwards 30 km to the Waikaia River sample area 8 km wide ; . Bird dispersal: Darwin's barberry Berberis darwinii ; Two sites were selected where the age of the original planting of barberry was known and there was a clear limit to the distribution of its progeny: in pasture and native scrub at Mouats Saddle, south-east Otago grid reference NZMS 260 G47 375035 ; , and in pasture, scattered exotic and native shrubland, and patches of silver beech Nothofagus menziesii ; forest in the Argyle Burn, northern Southland NZMS 260 F44 925885 ; . Several of the largest stems of barberry at its distribution limit at each site were cut at ground level and their growth rings were counted. The stem of the woody plant adjacent to each of 14 Mouats Saddle ; and 16 Argyle Burn ; barberry bushes was also sampled to obtain a comparison of ages. O BJECTIVES . The ABG I hip prosthesis has been shown to have accelerated polyethylene wear with associated periacetabular lysis; as a natural progression of that we have undertaken a retrospective review of the results of its successor the ABG II cup with a polyethylene liner. M ETHODS . From 1997 to 2000, 22 patients underwent 29 hip arthroplasties using ABG II acetabular component with polyethylene liner. All surgeries were performed by the senior author. With the exception of 3 patients who had a 22.2 mm Co-Cr head; all patients had a 28 mm zirconia ceramic head with a corresponding polyethylene liner. All patients were reviewed with radiographs and a clinical assessment including a Harris Hip score. R ESULTS . There were 10 male and 12 female patients with average age of 38.5 years. At a mean follow-up of 72 months 54 111 months ; 1 patient had already undergone revision surgery for both hips for aseptic loosening and acetabular osteolysis. Of the remaining 21 patients, 6 patients 8 joints ; had radiological evidence of periacetabular osteolysis a rate of 32%. The linear wear rate in this group was 0.37 mm year. The linear wear rate in the group of patients with no lysis was 0.30 mm year. Wear rate in both the groups of patients is higher than expected for metal backed cups. No association was noted with age, sex, femoral head size, cup size and use of screws. C ONCLUSIONS . Our study indicates that there is increased risk of periacetabular osteolysis and polyethylene wear with the use of ABG II cup with polyethylene liner. The accelerated wear rate in this patient group of young active individuals is a matter of concern. We would recommend all patients with this implant undergo regular clinical and radiological review. To f 4 10-2 , a value which is reached by the LBFGS method after 35 iterations. Again, this method clearly outperforms the other algorithms. Since the conjugate gradient shows a similar performance as the steepest descent technique, we omitted the data from figure 4.7. While the downhill simplex algorithm performed approximately as good as the steepest descent and the conjugate gradient method for the ellipsoid function, it performs obviously better for the Rosenbrock function. One clearly sees two different plateaus in the course of the tolerance N M shown in the upper panel of figure 4.7. The first between iteration number 5 and 20, and the second between iteration number 30 and 100. While the function value during these stages of the optimization procedure decreases only slowly, it shows significant progress towards the minimum in the intermediate phases. If one recalls the details of the algorithm discussed in section 4.1.5, it becomes evident, that in these phases of slow progress, seen as plateaus in figure 4.7, the simplex SN adjusts itself to the local conditions of the functions. After this adjustment is completed it proceeds with a linear convergence rate towards the minimum.
