The story of bidil is without doubt great news for a population of people who are disproportionately burdened by a deadly disease and bilberry.

Solid-state 19F-NMR spectra were acquired on a 500-MHz Varian Unity Inova spectrometer 19F frequency at 470.3 MHz ; . A double-tuned 1H 19 F ; flat-coil probe 2.5 mm 9 mm ; from Doty Scientific Columbia, SC ; was used. The orientation of the flat coil could be adjusted with a goniometer to within 2. A Hahn echo with a 25- s delay was used to acquire free induction decays of 5120 points zero filled to 16, 384 ; with a 2- s dwell time over 10 ms. The recycle time was 3 to 4 s, and 5, 000 to 10, 000 scans were acquired, depending on the phase state and linewidth of the sample. A 100-Hz linebroadening was applied, and all chemical shift values were referenced with respect to CFCl3 at 25C. T2-relaxation times were measured with an echo sequence over 10 suitably incremented delay times. The degree of sample orientation was assessed by 31P-NMR using a homebuilt flat-coil 1H X probe. In the first set of oriented samples containing F d ; 13-gA and F d ; 15-gA, 50% of the material were well oriented, whereas the sample prepared later from F13-gA was oriented to 90%. An appropriate powder contribution was thus subtracted from the corresponding 19F-NMR spectra, but this procedure had no impact on the analysis because the resulting lineshapes of analogous samples were very similar despite the different amounts of powder contribution subtracted ; . The residual 19F-background signal of the NMR probe was also subtracted. US FDA's authorisation of BiDil was somewhat controversial. There was concern that the authorisation could suggest that "race" was a genetic property, which might support certain offensive notions. There was a view that BiDil was a commercial ruse, a trick by a company seeking an "easy" niche when it was nothing special, and when the evidence of a particularly good response in blacks was "weak". There was concern that the "self-identified black" indication must be over-simplified and that there must be some pathophysiologic characteristic, and surely one not found only in those who selfidentify as "blacks", that accounts for the response. Those with this belief argue that current labeling deprives those non-black individuals of critical therapy and bioflavonoids. There are several ways Best Price has been concealed from HHS. The most straightforward is to simply not report the cash discounts given to a customer. That is what happened in the million settlement with Pfizer in 2002. Pfizer marketed Lipitor to the Ochsner Health Plan by giving it cash discounts to list the drug in its formulary. The cash discount reduced the price of Lipitor to Ochsner. However, when Pfizer reported its Lipitor prices to HHS, it did not report the discount to HHS. Because the discounts were not reported, the rebate amount on the drug was less than it should have been, and Medicaid ended up paying over million more for Lipitor than it should have during the time period covered by the case. A variation on this theme is the 5 million settlement with Schering-Plough in 2004. In order to place its most profitable product, the anti-histamine Claritin, on the formularies of certain national HMOs, Schering-Plough paid the HMOs kickbacks disguised as "data fees" or "risk share" payments. These kickbacks had the effect of lowering the price of Claritin to the HMO, but when Schering-Plough reported to HHS the price charged to the HMO, it did not report the price net of the "data fees" or "risk share" payments. As a result, Schering-Plough paid a significantly smaller rebate to Medicaid than it was required to pay. An even more creative approach to concealing Best Price is known as "lick and stick." This is what happened in the 7 million settlement with Bayer Corporation in 2003, which involved, among other drugs, the antibiotic Cipro. An HMO insisted on a deep discount, but Bayer did not want to give Medicaid a rebate based on that discounted price. In order to evade reporting that price as its Best Price, Bayer placed the HMO's National Drug Code number instead of its own on the label of the drugs it sold to the HMO at the deeply discounted price. Bayer did not include the price of the mislabeled drugs in its reports to HHS. It is worth stressing that in each of these settlements and others ; , the reason the federal government found out about the fraud was not because of a government audit or HHS oversight. Rather, it was because a private whistleblower, using the FCA, brought the information to the federal government's attention.

In order to answer these questions I will rely on contemporary literature on liberation theology as well as the different reports by the UN and other agencies that focus on the part of people, communities and nations to fulfill the MDG. I will also use sociological research that points to the difficulty of promoting the preferential option for the poor in North America due to a deep resistance of middle-class Christians to get involved in economic matters of international policy. This last body of work points to a clear resistance by some, and ignorance by others, to evangelical poverty as part of Christian discipleship and solidarity with the world's poor. I suggest that integrating a contemporary reading of the option for the poor in North America will require two things: a practice of critical self-reflection that opens our eyes to universal human ties and to pressing contemporary human needs, and understanding evangelical poverty as a call to move away from the material excesses of our economic privilege to make room for two-thirds world integral development. I hope that the conversations generated in the discussion will also provide other dimensions that contemporary liberation theologies must consider in North American and in the world at large. De Tavernier, Tolerance, Pluralism, Identity, and Truth The tension between tolerance, pluralism, identity and religious truth is not only a major subject in multicultural societies, but also in the interreligious and intercultural dialogue. Fundamentalist tendencies in many world religions seem to confirm the viewpoint that the stronger the religious identity is, the more difficult it is to reconcile it with a positive appreciation of a pluralistic culture. Secularised cultures, founded on the human rights tradition, in principle accept the pluralistic assumption. In those modern pluralistic environments, the concept `tolerance' is an important pillar. There are two risks when speaking about tolerance: the danger of banality and the risk of confusion when different meanings are mixed up. Considering the first risk, it is interesting to add a third notion to the pair of meanings `tolerant intolerant': the intolerable, i.e. what people consider unbearable, something that really will not pass. By discovering what offended people consider intolerable, we come more easily to the core of tolerance. In addition, we pay attention to the person who regards something as unbearable. Is it the tolerant who discovers the limits of his or her tolerance or is it the intolerant who labels everything that does not match his or her convictions as intolerable? That makes a difference, because the content of the intolerable is ambiguous from the beginning. The term tolerance always involves a number of ambiguities. In this respect, Paul Ricoeur refers to what the French dictionary `Le Petit Robert' says about tolerance. The first meaning is "tolerating something, not forbidding or requiring it, even if one has the possibility, freedom that results from this abstinence". It particularly concerns abstinence, but who must abstain and who must not? How can we make the transition from abstinence to freedom, which is the result of it, and about what freedom are we talking? The second meaning of the word tolerance, which strangely enough renders the first meaning of the word intolerance, is the following: "an attitude that consists in admitting by the other another way of thinking and a different way of acting than the one a person has adopted himself". The first meaning probably focuses on institutions, while the second meaning looks at individual behaviour.
