Itch pruritus ; is the predominant symptom of skin disease. This is particularly so for allergic skin disorders such as eczema and urticaria. Despite the acknowledgement of this troubling symptom, pruritus remains poorly understood, with even the major nerve pathways for itch and its close relationship to the sensation of pain remaining debatable.
In traumatic optic neuropathy, mega-dose of steroids and optic nerve canal decompression have been advocated for the treatment. Visual results seem to be better in patients younger than 4o years of age than in older patients. Interval between the injury and surgery, preoperative visual acuity, and the optic canal fracture does not seem to affect the outcome. A recent comparative non-randomised study found no clear benefit for either corticosteroid therapy or optic canal decompression surgery. It was concluded, in this study, that it would be reasonable to decide to treat or not treat on an individual patient basis.

Benzyl salicylate had similar effects to those observed with garlic oil increase in the proportion of propionate and butyrate and decrease in the proportion of acetate ; although to a lesser extent. These results suggest that this compound could also inhibit methane production in the rumen by direct inhibition of methanogenic Archaea or the metabolic pathways of methane synthesis. However, the lack of literature on the antimicrobial effects of this compound makes it difficult to hypothesize on its mechanism of action on rumen microbial fermentation. In contrast with most essentials oil and their secondary constituents, fenugreek extract did not reduce the concentration of total VFA even at high doses, which suggests that it did not reduce diet fermentability and energy availability. Fenugreek decreased the proportion of BCVFA, increased the proportion of propionate, and reduced the ammonia N concentration. These effects can be attributed to the high content in steroidal saponins. However, yucca extract, which also contains saponins, had no effect on rumen microbial fermentation. It is likely that the lack of effect of yucca extract on rumen microbial fermentation is related to the high pH used in the test. Cardozo et al. 2005 ; recently demonstrated that the effect of yucca saponins on rumen microbial fermentation was highly dependent on the pH of the media. In addition, fenugreek has more than twice the amount of saponins compared with yucca extract. Several studies have evaluated the effects of saponins on rumen fermentation. A consistent finding when saponins are supplied to ruminants is a reduction in ruminal ammonia N concentration Wallace et al., 1994; Hristov et al., 1999 ; . These effects have been generally attributed to the pronounced antiprotozoal activity of saponins Francis et al., 2002 ; , protozoa being the primary rumen ammonia producers. The antiprotozoal effects of saponins is due to their capacity to form irreversible complexes with the cholesterol in the protozoal cell membrane, causing breakdown of the membrane, cell lysis, and death Francis et al., 2002 ; . Contrary to the increase of pH observed in essential oils and its main active components, fenugreek and yucca extracts decreased pH compared with control. Miami, FL Sept. 23, 2004 ; An integrated analysis of data from multiple clinical trials demonstrates that female patients who received the CYPHER Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent are five times more likely to avoid a repeat reblockage in the treated arteries than women treated with a bare metal stent, according to Cordis Corporation, a Johnson & Johnson company. Benefits were also seen in women with increased risks of heart disease due to diabetes and or smoking. While extensive clinical data prove that the CYPHER Stent is helpful for a wide variety of patients with heart disease, this is the first data analysis to focus exclusively on the CYPHER Stent's effectiveness in women. "There has been no definitive analysis focused exclusively on the impact of drug-eluting stents on women, " said Cindy L. Grines, MD, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. "This is significant because heart disease is the main killer of women in the United States, regardless of race, and most women don't even know it. Patients, sequentially hospitalized with a diagnosis of TB at the Octvio Mangabeira specialized hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil between July 2001 and July 2003, were selected to participate in the study. The Octvio Mangabeira is a tertiary public hospital that is a reference center for TB and other pneumopathies for the entire state of Bahia, receiving patients from the capital Salvador ; and rural areas. It has 218 beds of which 60% are exclusively for TB patients, and deals with around 85% of all hospitalizations for TB in the state. The diagnosis of TB was made according to the criteria established by the amended Brazilian Guidelines for Tuberculosis: 1 ; detection of acid-fast bacilli in sputum direct microscopy Ziehl-Neelsen method ; and or positive culture for M. tuberculosis in Lwenstein-Jensen medium 2 ; clinical, epidemiological and radiological findings compatible with TB, associated with a favorable response to treatment with antiTB drugs [22]. Acid-fast bacilli-positive cases with a culture showing non-tuberculous mycobacteria NTM ; were excluded. Demographic, clinical and epidemiological data were collected prospectively at the time of hospital admission by a team of medical students using a semi-structured interview instrument that contained, among others, the following variables: age, gender, tobacco use, alcohol dependence, previous anti-TB treatment, previous hospitalization for TB, and history of having abandoned treatment. The CAGE questionnaire, validated in Brazilian studies and widely used in research protocols involving TB patients, was used to define alcohol dependence [23]. For the purpose of analysis, patients who stated that they did not consume alcohol and those who consumed alcohol but whose CAGE questionnaire was negative 2 positive answers ; were considered not to be alcohol-dependent. Cultures for mycobacteria were requested on the day of hospital admission, while sputum samples were systematically collected on the day following admission, irrespective of medical indication. All cultures were performed in LwensteinJensen medium at the laboratory of the Octvio Mangabeira Hospital in accordance with the standardized guidelines determined in the Ministry of Health's Bacteriology Manual [24]. Tests of sensitivity to anti-TB drugs were carried out at the Central Laboratory for Public Health in accordance with the proportion method proposed by Canetti et al. [25]. Cases of multiresistance were defined as sensitivity tests indicating simultaneous resistance to rifampicin R ; and isoniazid H ; regardless of whether they were associated with resistance to other anti-TB drugs or not. HIV-1 and -2 testing was requested for all patients irrespective of the presence of risk factors for HIV infection, and tests were carried out at the Central Laboratory for Public Health using the ELISA method as screening ; with confirmation by Western Blot or indirect immunofluorescence whenever ELISA was positive. IN RECENT YEARS several reports have been published indicating the therapeutic value of Atabrine for the correction of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly the supraventricular types. Very few cases of ventricular tachycardia have been treated with Atabrine and in none was a successful result obtained. The following case is therefore reported to point out the potentialities of Atabrine in ventricular tachycardia and to stimulate further studies with this drug in the ventricular arrhythmias. Tristar fenugreek can produce high yield Mir et al., 1993 ; and high quality forage, can be grown for hay or silage Mir et al., 1998 ; , contains animal growth promoting substances such as diosgenin not present in other forage legumes, but does not cause bloat Mir et al., 1997 ; like many forage legumes. Fenugreek genotypes differ in morphology, growth habit, biomass and seed production capability. Chemical constituents of the seed such as saponins, fibre, protein, amino acids and fatty acid contents also differ markedly Taylor et al., 1997 and Taylor et al., 2000 ; . This variability is most often overlooked or underestimated in clinical trials. Our research suggests that the genetic variability and the genotype by environmental interaction will play a significant role when the crop is used by the nutraceutical industry in Canada, where high quality seed production is at and fludarabine.
Pulmonary hypertension is a rare, lethal disease that occurs in isolation or in association with myriad diseases; it often eludes diagnosis unless the clinician has a high initial suspicion. Clinical history and exam reveal subtle clues, as do initial testing with electrocardiography and chest radiography. Transthoracic echocardiography may provide initial data supporting a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension but right heart catheterization is the gold standard for demonstrating mean pulmonary artery pressures 25mmHg at rest in the setting of a normal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. The algorithm developed by the ACCP should be used as a guide for diagnostic strategy for the initial evaluation. Exercise testing, either through full cardiopulmonary exercise testing or 6MWT, predicts clinically relevant end-points, including mortality, and helps to monitor treatment response and progression of disease.
This distinction between the orientation of the providers of degree courses relative to other courses is important, particularly given the type of industry projected to emerge in Ireland as described in Chapter 4 and 6 of this report. It also suggests a further important trend, one which cannot be proven without an in-depth study of decision-making among the providers of non-degree courses. This is that there is evidence of a tendency to follow developments in the economy rather than create the conditions for the economy to develop in certain directions. However, there is a clear contrast with the leading role being played by education policy in Singapore or the collaborative role being provided by the educational establishments with industry in the US. Comparison with these regions suggests that the approach being taken in Ireland is likely to be inadequate to stimulate the development of biotechnology where the prior existence of expertise in terms of the skills output of the education institutes, as well as research, would appear to be a prerequisite. Declining student numbers and lower preferences towards sciences have been accompanied by a lowering of entry level requirements for science certificate diploma degree programmes. The marginal decline in acceptances onto science degrees from 2000 ; meant that universities accepted students who would previously have selected a certificate diploma course in the ITs. This trend, if continued, will result in a lowering of demonstrated academic abilities of entrants to science courses and, if entry levels to universities continue to be reasonable indicators of subsequent performance, a fall in the skills levels of science graduates. When placed alongside the onset of the decline in secondary level graduates due to demographic changes, the number of enrolments in science at ITs is likely to continue to decline. This trend gives rise to a number of further important considerations. The determinants of the level of points required for entry to any course are complex and have not been studied extensively. In an ideal world, the level of points required would be primarily determined by the degree of academic difficulty associated with a course. In reality, however, this is not the case and there are many anomalies if viewed in this light. A much better model to describe the level of points required is given if the number of points required are viewed as the `price' of gaining entry to the course. As such, like any other price, the level at which this is set may or may not be related to the inherent `value' of the course; in this case `value' meaning academic difficulty. The only thing that can be stated with certainty is that the price is the result of the interaction of demand and supply for the course. Thus, courses that may appear to be broadly similar in terms of the prospectus may vary considerably in points as a result of the institution in which they are delivered and other issues, most notably restrictions on supply.

We therefore compared the effects of TBZ and MBC treatment on different markers for cell polarity. In contrast to cells treated with TBZ, cells treated with MBC did not show any disorganization of the actin cytoskeleton Fig. 4A, E, F ; . Similarly, although we previously showed that TBZ treatment transiently delocalizes a ral3-GFP fusion protein from cell tips Sawin and Nurse, 1998 ; , MBC had no effect on ral3-GFP distribution over time Fig. 4B, G, H ; . A combined treatment of both TBZ and MBC also delocalized actin and ral3-GFP Fig. 4A, B ; , indicating that the lack of depolarization seen in MBC-treated cells was not due to the specific inhibition of depolarisation by MBC. Given these striking differences, we also measured rates of cell elongation during the different drug treatments. Whereas TBZ treatment led to a transient arrest in elongation that correlated roughly with the period of actin and ral3-GFP disruption Sawin and Nurse, 1998 ; , microtubule disruption by MBC had no measurable effect on cell elongation as compared with DMSO-treated controls Fig. 4C ; . To confirm that this conclusion is also applicable to wild-type cells, we repeated measurements of cell growth rates using both elutriated cells from asynchronous exponentially growing cultures and also cells recovering from nitrogen starvation. Honoring Marty & Tom The Celic Run pays tribute to two brothers, Marty and Tom, two committed competitors, who were pacesetters in the NYC running scene. Marty Celic made his mark early in hurdles, high and long jump and evolved into a potent 10K runner. Marty, a NYC firefighter with Ladder 18, died tragically at age 25 fighting an arson fire on 8th Street off Avenue C, where "The Marty Celic - Firemen's Park" was established. Tom Celic, a 43 year old executive at Marsh, lost his life in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. Tom was a first class distance runner with two NYC Marathon wins as first runner from Staten Island. Both Marty and Tom lived life fully and were committed in their support of community and friends, who continue to honor their memories. The Celic Run continues to permit an annual track scholarship award at Monsignor Farrell HS, where both Marty and Tom ran. Marty's FDNY "Brothers" remain close to the Celic Family since 1977 and continue to provide planning and logistical support for the run. A competitive dimension exists in the run as fire companies compete for bragging rights in earnest.
