Materials Methimazole is an Aldrich compound crystallized from CCl4. Carbimazole was generously given by the laboratoires Roche Nicholas Gaillard, France ; with the following characteristics: white microcrystalline powder, mp 124 C, assay 99.44%, heavy metals 10 ppm, drying loss 0.000%, and max 0.1 M HCl ; 291 nm. Heptane, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloroform, 1, 4-dioxane, methyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile are Aldrich solvents of spectroscopic grade.

Materials and Methods Animals Wistar albino rats of both sexes 220280 g ; were kept in a room at a constant temperature of 22 1 with a 12-h light 12-h darkness cycle and fed standard pellet chow and water which were available ad libitum. This study was approved by Marmara University School of Medicine, Animal Care and Use Committee. Methimazole 004% ; was administered in drinking water starting 15 days prior to induction of colitis, while control animals were treated with normal tap water for the same period of time control group ; . Each group consisted of 7 animals. Between the caudate and putamen was evident, indicating a more severe loss of DA fibers in the putamen. A different effect on the caudate and putamen, with relative sparing of caudate function in PD, has been demonstrated in vivo elsewhere 23-26, 36.44 ; and was recently shown by Seibyl et al. 16 ; in a [l23I]Y-CITstudy. This is in accordance with postmortem studies in PD, where a more pronounced loss of cells in the ventrolateral substantia nigra, primarily projecting to the pos terior putamen, is described and with the finding of a more pronounced loss of DA in the putamen 37-42 ; . Iodine-123-Y-CIT binding in the striatum showed a signifi cant inverse correlation to the degree of disability as measured by the H Y stage and UPDRS scores. Similar results have recently been reported by Seibyl et al. 16 ; , Rinne et al. 17 ; and in preliminary form by our own group 45 ; . These significant correlations with simple measures of disease severity such as the H Y scale and also with the more detailed UPDRS motor and activities of daily living scores suggest that the loss of [123I]Y-CIT binding in the striatum 20-hr postinjection actually is a robust index for dopaminergic nerve cell loss in PD. Laruelle et al. 43 ; compared kinetic and graphical analyses with the simple ratio method on the second day after injection of [l23I]Y-CITin five healthy volunteers and concluded that the calculation of the specific nonspecific-bound ratio at the time when a binding equilibrium is reached about 16-24-hr postinjection ; gives the closest estimate of the binding potential BmaJK-d- Furthermore, the coefficient of variance of repeated measures was only 6% in their study. These findings underline the validity of the ratio method of ['23I]Y-CITbinding at a time of binding equilibrium. Roidism. After several discussions with the family, it was decided that GR would undergo RAI therapy. Five days after discontinuing methimazole in preparation for a RAI uptake and scan, GR developed loose bowel movements and a temperature of 38.3 C. On physical examination he had a heart rate of 128 beats minute, blood pressure of 120 60, 3 systolic murmur throughout his precordium, and an enlarged firm thyroid gland with bruits. The estimated weight of his thyroid was 70 g. Propranolol 3.3 mg kg day ; was started, and a 24-h RAI uptake revealed 98% uptake. On day 9 after discontinuing the methimazole he was treated with 7 mCi 131I 100 Ci 131I g thyroid tissue ; . Four days after treatment with 131I, GR vomited and had a brief generalized tonic-clonic seizure. In the emergency room, he was postictal and afebrile with a heart rate of 104 beats minute and blood pressure of 120 70. GR was diagnosed as having thyroid storm encephalopathy. After 5 days of medical therapy he had no further seizures, and he was discharged on propranolol and PTU. The patient's laboratory data and treatment are summarized in Table 1. Eight months after his first RAI therapy, GR had biochemical evidence of worsening hyperthyroidism and underwent a second treatment with 12.7 mCi 131I. Ten months later, when it seemed apparent that the second RAI therapy failed, he was treated with 20.2 mCi 131I. Three months after his third course of RAI, his thyroid was palpable but not enlarged and laboratory data revealed biochemical hypothyroidism and methyldopa.

When the net book value exceeds the discounted cash flows, a provision is recorded equal to the difference between these two amounts. Other intangible assets, consisting principally of patents, trademarks, and software are amortized on a straight-line basis over their estimated useful lives. For patents and trademarks this period is not to exceed 25 years, and for software the range is from three to five years. The book value of these assets is adjusted whenever events or changes in circumstances which could have a material effect on the future non discontinued cash flows generated by these assets indicate that the carrying amount of an asset may not be fully recoverable.

However, in evaluating these results, it must also be considered that these were not randomized studies, and thus there were no comparative placebo controls. during periods of supplementation [109]. Similarly, in a sixmonth study by Duntas et al. [110] in 65 subjects with autoimmune thyroiditis, TPO-Ab levels declined by 56% in those receiving T4 and selenium vs 27% in those receiving T4 alone. In a randomized, but unblinded study by Vrca et al. [111], 57 subjects with Graves' hyperthyroidism were treated with methimazole vs methimazole plus selenium and other antioxidants. Subjects in the latter group had a more rapid decline in serum free T4 and free T3 concentrations at 30 and 60 days, and more rapid increase in TSH activity at 60 days-- demonstrating that those receiving selenium attained euthyroidism faster. Thus, the relative intake of both selenium and iodine may be an important factor with respect the etiology of autoimmune thyroid disease, and this may also have implications for the development cardiovascular disease. A reduction in selenium intake and status has been noted in the United Kingdom and a number of other European countries over the last 20 to 25 years [112]. In many of these countries, daily intake is below recommended intake levels, which would lead to underexpression of glutathione peroxidase and other blood and tissue selenoproteins [98]. One exception to this trend has been Finland. Due to geological conditions, soil selenium concentrations are considered low in Finland compared with other countries [113]. As a result in 1978, highselenium wheat was imported, and later in 1984, selenium was added to fertilizer for both grain and forage production [113]. Iodine intake has also increased significantly. Iodine is added to table salt, but prime sources are from dairy products and eggs, as iodine is now used in the dairy industry and added to animal salt [114]. In the past several decades, dramatic changes in health and life expectancy have occurred in Finland. For example, cardiovascular disease mortality has declined by over 50%, while the average life expectancy has increased by about five years [115]. Whether the increased iodine and selenium intake both now considered the highest in Europe [113, 116] ; played any role one can only speculate. In Japan, the intake of iodine [117, 118] and selenium [119, 120] is also higher than most western nations due to a diet rich in seafood, a key source of both elements [120 122]. However, cross-national studies have demonstrated that salt intake in Japan is also markedly higher than western nations and that stroke mortality is also high [120]. Despite the high sodium intake, rates of coronary heart disease are lower in the Japanese [120], while overall life expectancy is higher [2]. Although there are many other dietary differences between Japan and the west, elucidating the synergistic role iodine and selenium play in cardiovascular health in countries such as Japan and Finland could provide novel insights into the etiology of this disease and methysergide.

H.E. Ms. Margherita Boniver, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs in Italy, indicated that in all violent conflicts, a denial of human rights could be found. In the case of the denial of human rights in Iraq, Ms. Boniver stated that not only did the victims of such a regime suffer, but also the neighbouring countries and the world as a whole are subject to its external menace. Therefore, the international community must renew its commitment to human rights as a moral imperative and a rational strategy for preventing war and terrorism. Human rights should not be suspended in times of war, however, and the most exposed human beings, such as children, must be protected. The international community has a specific set of principles and norms aimed at guaranteeing these very rights during conflict - humanitarian law, a powerful and tested legal body. The ninth speaker of the session was H.E. Mr. Goran Svilanovic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Montenegro. He provided an outline of the cooperation developing in South-Eastern Europe, and declared that the countries of this region have achieved muc h in the promotion of human and minority rights. Serbia and Montenegro asserted its commitment to comply with all its international obligations, including that of the Hague Tribunal. In light of the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister, it was stressed that Serbia and Montenegro would combat terrorism and organised crime as a priority. H.E. Mr. Patrick Anthony Chinamasa, Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of Zimbabwe strongly emphasised the continued discrimination towards the developing world, both in world affairs in general, and within the United Nations itself. He stated that this discrimination must cease in order to preserve the credibility of the Commission, and that Africa should reject the blatant politicisation of the Commission. Mr. Chinamasa stressed that specific countries do not respect human rights, as if they did, they would consider the plight of the Iraqi children before attacking them. He argued that this was another example of the double standards maintained by many Western nations. He called on the Commission to remain fair, honest, and refrain from petty criticism, in order to engage in productive dialogue. The final speaker of the session was Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. He described the Union as founded on core values which reflect basic human rights and the promotion of democracy. It was maintained that gender equality is needed in order to achieve this democracy. Mr. Johnsson stated that the IPU had an extensive programme to support and defend human rights, specifically the rights of members of parliament. In exercising its right of reply to the representative of Italy, the representative of Iraq expressed dismay at the Italian stance, and stressed that no one had the right to make unjust judgements through threatening peace and security. He stated that the children of Iraq would be the first victims in any conflict, and expressed the opinion that the United States does not respect the human rights of developing peoples, but is more concerned with economic factors, such as oil and micafungin.
Stereochemistry of methyl p-tolyl sulfide sulfoxidation by FMO1 was similar to results determined previously Sadeque et al., 1992 ; . The only enantiomer observed was the R ; sulfoxide. A peak marking the S ; -sulfoxide was not detected in any of the FMO1 assays. Product formation was linear for the first 30 minutes for all variants. Based on standard curves with the R ; - and S ; -sulfoxides at least 95% of the sulfoxide formed was the R ; -enantiomer. Heat treatment in the absence of NADPH reduced FMO1 activity to less than 15% data not shown ; . No difference was observed in heat lability of any of the variants examined. Human liver microsomes, obtained from Gentest, catalyzed the formation of a racemic 50% R S mixture of the enantiomers data not shown ; . The Vmax values determined for the variants followed the same trend as for the methimazole assay, with H97Q and I303T being elevated, and the I303V equal to the wild-type FMO1. Vmax Km ratios for H97Q and I303T were found to be greater p 0.05 ; than the rest of the variants. The R502X variant was catalytically active but with a lowered Vmax and Km relative to the other variants.

12th SOHO Workshop, `Local and Global Helioseismology: The Present and Future', Big Bear Lake, CA, USA, 27 October - 1 November 2002 The 12th SOHO Workshop was held jointly with the annual meeting of the Global Oscillation Network Group GONG ; . It focused on the study of the interior of the Sun from a seismic perspective and the prospects for similar study of Sun-like stars. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for the scientific community to pause and reflect on the status of this fertile field, with more than half a solar cycle of SOHO and GONG observations. More than 120 participants discussed over 100 papers addressing a wide variety of topics, including the observational status of low-, medium- and highdegree p-mode characterisation, low-frequency g-mode detection, solar structure and dynamics, mode excitation and damping, and advances in local helioseismology. There were seven sessions: - - Local and Global Helioseismology; Helioseismic Imaging; Temporal Variations in the Solar Interior; Irradiance and Helioseismology; From Solar to Stellar Seismology; Structure of the Solar Interior; Prospects for the Future and mifepristone.
The SSA-PCR technique was used to amplify 400 and 600 bp Bacillus pumilus DNA fragments respectively corresponding to the promoter and terminator regions that flanked the 1100 500 and 600 fragments ; bp region of the CEST gene. The subcloning of the entire open reading frame contained within the amplified Bacillus pumilus carboxylesterase in pET 28a expression vector and subsequent plating on nutrient agar medium containing tributyrin resulted in the production of zones of clearence surrounding the growing.

NF-B serves as an ubiquitous regulator of the host immune and inflammatory response and its participation in apoptosis, proliferation, and differentiation has recently been demonstrated Karin, 1998; Karin, 2006; Li and Verma, 2002 ; . However, excessive activation or deregulation of NF-B is thought to play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of several immunologic and inflammatory disorders such as morbus Alzheimer, atherosclerosis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, and multiple sclerosis Kumar, et al., 2004; Wright and Christman, 2003 ; . Interestingly, single case studies with hyperthyroid patients suffering from inflammatory myopathy described a complete clinical and pathologic resolution upon antithyroid treatment with carbimazole Hardiman, et al., 1997 ; . Thionamide therapy is also beneficial to some chronic inflammatory disorders such as psoriasis Elias, 2004 ; . Additionally, it protects from autoimmune diseases in experimental animal models Mozes, et al., 1998; Singer, et al., 1994 ; or diminishes aberrant leukocyte adhesion as observed in pathological inflammation Dagia, et al., 2004 ; . These observations may now be explained by the thionamide mediated inhibition of NF-B. We observed that the mechanism of thionamide mediated immunosuppression depended on the chemical structure of the individual reagent. Thioureylenes with a pyrimidine like nucleus such as the anti-thyroid drug propylthiouracil presented data ; or the barbiturates thiopental or thiamylal Loop, et al., 2002; Loop, et al., 2003 ; showed high resemblance in dose response and both inhibited the IB-kinase complex. In contrast, carbimazole, a sulfur containing imidazole derivate, repressed the proximal activation of Rac-1, necessary for MLK3 or MEKK1 dependent activation of IKK . Redox-active sulfur was central for the NF-B inhibitory potential of carbimazole, propylthiouracil, and thio-barbiturates as demonstrated by comparison with methimazole or.
